Sharpeville hero backs fun run for elderly home

Beyond the electricity crisis, money raised from the run will go toward general repairs and upgrades at the home.

SHARPEVILLE.- The Zilisemenye Elderly Home is lacing up its running shoes.

The non-profit organisation has announced a Fun Run to raise much-needed funds to improve living conditions for its residents.

The event, scheduled for April, has gained high-profile support from local athletics star, Letitia Pheleu.

The former New Generation Athletics Club runner, who famously represented South Africa on the world stage, has stepped up as an ambassador for the cause. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Pheleu said the home is desperately in need of financial backing, looking at the conditions. The biggest priority is restoring electricity.

The facility has been without electricity for some time, and with winter approaching, it is important for the elderly.

She is pleading with the community to come in numbers to support this initiative.

“We are inviting everyone, young and old, to come and support us. We really need everyone’s support to make this event a success.”

Beyond the electricity crisis, money raised from the run will go toward general repairs and upgrades at the home. Pheleu is calling on local businesses and residents to either join the run or donate whatever they can.

Pheleu is no stranger to the track.

Growing up in Sharpeville, she rose to stardom under the leadership of Joseph Diale. She became one of the country’s top junior athletes, representing South Africa in various international competitions.

Her success also saw her featured in the Sedibeng Ster Sport Star of the Year Awards (formerly Vaal Weekly Sports Star of the Year Awards).
