Safety concerns for Zone 20 big street
“Moreover, this road poses a significant risk to the safety of children who travel to and from school during rainy days."
SEDIBENG. – The Democratic Alliance (DA) Councillor, Hlalele Mosuoane, together with the residents and users of Zone 20 are concerned about the state of the ‘big street’ in the area.
The street is in a deplorable state of our road, and worse during rainy days.
The road is severely damaged, and water fills the potholes and craters, making it impossible for cars to pass safely. During bad weather seasons, this road becomes a significant hazard, posing risks to drivers, pedestrians, and vehicles.

The risks include:
- Vehicle damage: The rough road surface and hidden potholes can cause significant damage to vehicles, resulting in costly repairs.
- Stranded vehicles: Cars may become stuck in the waterlogged road, leaving drivers and passengers stranded and vulnerable.
- Emergency response delays: The road’s condition may hinder emergency services, such as ambulances police, and fire trucks, from responding promptly to emergencies.

Mosuoane said, “Moreover, this road poses a significant risk to the safety of children who travel to and from school during rainy days. The flooded road makes it difficult for them to walk safely, increasing the likelihood of accidents or injuries. This is unacceptable and requires immediate attention. Furthermore, the road’s condition is particularly distressing during funerals as it is difficult to drive on that road for funeral preparations. We urge the relevant authorities to take immediate action to repair and maintain Zone 20 big street.”

The community requested that:
- Urgent repairs: Fill potholes and resurface the road to ensure safe passage
- Drainage improvements: Install or clear drainage systems to prevent waterlogging
- Regular maintenance: Schedule regular inspections and maintenance to prevent future deterioration
“We believe that every road user deserves a safe and reliable transportation network. We appeal to the authorities to address this critical issue promptly.”
Sedibeng Ster sent an enquiry about the matter to the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) which has promised to make its own investigations and reply.
