Major road upgrades to take place in Sedibeng

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport will upgrade key routes in Sedibeng District Municipality as part of the 2026 Light Road Rehabilitation Programme, targeting high-traffic roads to improve safety, mobility and infrastructure longevity.

As part of a roll–out of priority road rehabilitation projects across Gauteng, a number of roads in Sedibeng District Municipality are due to undergo major upgrades.

The Gauteng MEC for Transport and Logistics, Kedibone Diale -Tlabela. announced that the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport (GDPRT) has initiated the implementation of priority road rehabilitation projects across various regions of the province as part of the 2026 Light Road Rehabilitation Programme.

Priority routes have been identified in Sedibeng, Tshwane, the West Rand, and the City of Johannesburg, following comprehensive assessments of road conditions. In Sedibeng, roads that are due for an upgrade include the R59, D1463, and D83 – Villiers Road, situated in Midvaal, as well as the R59 and R42 (P156/3) – Barrage Road in Emfuleni.

The programme aims to strengthen proactive road maintenance through targeted interventions that improve road safety, enhance mobility, and preserve critical road infrastructure.

Diale-Tlabela explains that they have taken a deliberate and strategic approach to prioritise key corridors and high–traffic routes across all regions of Gauteng.

“These interventions are intended to extend the lifespan of our road infrastructure, improve road safety for all users, and support economic productivity across the province,” Tlabela adds, adding that preventative maintenance remains the most cost–effective approach to road asset management.

“Investing in structured road rehabilitation helps the Department reduce long-term reconstruction costs. It also ensures safer and more reliable travel for motorists, freight operators, and public transport users.”

“We are strengthening oversight, inspections, and contractor accountability to ensure quality workmanship and value for money,” she added.
