SEDIBENG.- Local match official Mohale Mofokeng was named the Gauteng ABC Motsepe League Referee of the Year for his standout performance in the 2025/2026 season.

The awards took place after the referees’ workshop, held at Fun Valley in Johannesburg on September 6.

The workshop and awards were attended by all Gauteng ABC Motsepe League referees, match commissioners, and SAFA officials.

Not long ago, Sedibeng Ster Sport profiled Mofokeng as one of the best referees in the ABC Motsepe League. It was no coincidence that he was named the ABC Motsepe League Referee of the Year.

He was undoubtedly the best referee not only in the ABC Motsepe League but also in the Gauteng Development League.

He didn’t look down on these youngsters; he treated them like senior players despite their young age.

He was tasked with the huge responsibility of officiating crucial games for the ABC Motsepe League and the SAFA Sedibeng Hollywoodbets Men’s Regional League that decided the league’s title and relegation.

Former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani highly rates Mofokeng for obvious reasons: his bravery in taking crucial decisions and not being influenced by the atmosphere. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Mofokeng said that as much as he had a great season, it never crossed his mind that he would be named the ABC Motsepe Referee of the Year.

He told Sedibeng Ster Sport that other outstanding referees in the league could have won this Referee of the Year award.

“I must admit, I didn’t expect to win this award considering that all my colleagues were outstanding last season.

We push each other, and we all want to see each other be successful and get promoted to officiate in the PSL. This award is not only about me but also about all the referees I worked with during the season. They also contributed to being the best in the league, and I want to say thank you to everyone,” he told Sedibeng Ster Sport.

Hlungwani also took this opportunity to congratulate Mofokeng, saying the future looks great for him.

He told Sedibeng Ster Sport that Mofokeng’s attitude will take him places. “As I said in my previous interview, no doubt, Mofokeng is one of the referees who will go far in refereeing. Watch the space; the boy is something else, and he reminds me of myself at my prime as a referee,” said Hlungwani.
