Local schools shine at Kay Motsepe Foundation Schools Championships

“I’m very proud of my boys, young as they are."

SEDIBENG.- Local schools from the Sedibeng West and Sedibeng East districts competed against top-tier academies at the annual Kay Motsepe Provincial Schools Championships, held at Sunward Park High School in Boksburg on September 5.

Representing the Sedibeng West (D8) District were Motlotlo Primary School from Zone 14 in Sebokeng for the U13 boys and Qwelang Primary School from Zone 12 for the U13 girls. Meanwhile, Emmanuel Primary School from Sharpeville carried the banner for the Sedibeng East (D7) District in the U13 boys category.

These teams earned their places at the provincial showcase by securing overall victories at both school and district levels. For several of the local youngsters, it was a brand-new experience competing at such a high level alongside prestigious setups like the School of Excellence.

Motlotlo Primary School coach Thabiso Khaoli admitted that the standard was exceptionally high and that his young players struggled against physically stronger opponents. Although they returned home without a victory, Khaoli expressed immense pride in his squad, noting they were likely the youngest team in their group.

Reflecting on the tournament, Khaoli told Sedibeng Ster Sport that talent alone is not enough to win games and that hard work is essential.

“I’m very proud of my boys, young as they are. We went there with a young team, and next year the same team will qualify to play in this tournament. We will go there well prepared because now we know what to expect based on our experience. We plan to return well-prepared next year with hopes of bringing the trophy home,” said Khaoli.
