Johannesburg may be one of South Africa’s most expensive city by most people’s standards, but you can actually score a few bargains if you know where to go. Yes, amid its glamorous shopping malls, upscale nightclubs and trendy restaurants, there are plenty of incredibly cheap things to do that let you still get a true taste of the City of Gold.

Visit a gallery

If you’re a fan of modern art, the Goodman Gallery at 10 Chester Road in Johannesburg is the place for you. It’s quite possible to spend an afternoon viewing the contemporary artworks which largely stem from South African and African artists. Best of all, it’s free.

A walk in the park

The Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens in Roodepoort and Emmarentia Dam in Emmarentia are perennial favourites with outdoor lovers. Various events happen at the gardens throughout the year and visitors are welcome to bring a picnic. The entrance fee ranges from free to R45 for adults.

Get up close with animals

For just R81 for adults and R51 for children, the family can enjoy various animal encounters at the Johannesburg Zoo – from the Big Five to their resident ape, Charles the Chimp, to red bellied lemurs.

Admire mother nature’s greatest features

The Hennops Hiking Trail (R70/adult and R40/schoolchildren)’ located about 45 minutes from Sandton, gets you away from the buzz of the city for a chance to see lush riverside gorges, rocky plateaus, giant aloes, and easygoing grassland strolls.
