ELM’s default could lead to water shortage
"Rand Water and Eskom's decision to reduce the water pressure and electricity capacity of the Emfuleni Local Municipality (Evaton, Sebokeng, Vaal Oewer, Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging) could lead to a large-scale water shortage in this area."
Gerda Senekal, FF Plus councilor: Emfuleni Local Municipality, further emphasizes in a media statement that Rand Water’s decision to reduce Emfuleni’s water pressure by 20% due to non-payment, is due to the municipality’s inability to fulfill their installment agreements. .
The Emfuleni Municipality owes Rand Water R1.1 billion and is R994 million in arrears. Eskom has meanwhile reduced the electrical current from 600 to 300 amperes, which impedes the water supply to large parts of Emfuleni. Rand Water supplies water to the Langerand water pumping station in Sonland Park in Vereeniging, after which it is discharged to various water towers in Emfuleni. The FF Plus is of the opinion that the reduced electric current and the reduced water pressure are leading to some of the water towers running empty.
“Residents who have used borehole water in the past can no longer use this source, due to underground water pollution.
“Taxpayers are confronted daily with cable theft, water leaks, outdated infrastructure and water and electricity outages attributed to mismanagement of the Emfuleni municipality,” said Senekal.
“On several occasions, the FF Plus has the mayor, rdl. Gift Moerane and the municipal manager, Lucky Leseane, asked to explain why they neglect to pay Eskom and Rand Water, as the municipality receives about R370 million from taxpayers every month, ”Senekal concluded.
