Armed robbers storm Sebokeng church

The Church Leaders for Change have raised concern over the alarming number of break-ins in Emfuleni churches.

Safety in churches has once again come under the spotlight following a brazen robbery at Koinonia Bible Church in Zone 14 on August 18.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Nthabiseng Mokhachane reports that security officers were inside the church when a group of armed suspects suddenly entered. The suspects were reportedly wearing balaclavas and were armed with firearms.

According to Mokhachane, one of the security officers was found outside the premises and forced into the church through a window. The security officers were subsequently tied up using their shoelaces. Their hands and feet were restrained.

The suspects seized music equipment and screen systems valued at an undisclosed amount before fleeing the scene. Mokhachane confirms that no shots were fired during the incident; however, a security officer was assaulted.

“Police are appealing to churches, businesses and other institutions to strengthen their security measures, particularly as criminals appear to be targeting valuable equipment such as sound systems and other electronic equipment.”

Mokhachane confirmed that a business robbery case docket is open for investigation.
Following the incident, the church released a statement, detailing there had been a significant loss of crucial equipment and vandalism to the premises.

“Our premises were raided by armed criminals who held our night staff at gunpoint.
“We wish to alert the Body of Christ that there are indeed syndicates targeting churches in the Vaal and beyond. Please safeguard your resources and equipment.”

The church has appealed to the community to come forward with any leads that may assist with the recovery of the equipment.

Meanwhile, the Church Leaders for Change (CLC) have condemned church break-ins in Emfuleni.
“We strongly condemn the theft of sound equipment from churches. Our churches are places of worship, community support and hope.”

Members of the public with any information regarding the incident can contact Detective Constable Lerato Malebo on 061 084 6624.
