Eight ways to improve your tech health
Easier said than done, but making a few tech adjustments can have a really positive impact on your overall wellbeing.
- Don’t look at your phone for the first two hours of the day; you will find this awkward at first, but learn to cope with the discomfort or go and do something like meditate or exercise.
- When extended family or friends are visiting, make a vow to leave your devices in a certain area.
- Adopt no technology zones in your home such as the dining room and bedrooms, and make rules that at mealtimes or after 6pm, no devices are allowed.
- Place books and magazines on desks, coffee tables and in bathrooms.
- Turn your phone colour filter onto red; it tricks your eyes into thinking it’s less bright than it really is.
- Monitor your screen time; you’ll be horrified by how much time you actually spend on your device.
- If you work on a device all day, stick to the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, focus on something 20 feet (about 6m) away for 20 seconds and daydream for a moment.
- Ask your optometrist about new offugo blue-block readers that can reduce the effects of blue light and protect your eyes from glare. Some ranges come in different colours and styles plus you can visit the website and “try” the glasses virtually. There is even a lens available for people with 20-20 vision.
