VANDERBIJLPARK – The SAPS National Rugby Championship wrapped up on August 1 at the Isak Steyl Stadium after a week of high-energy action, fierce competition, and strong community support in Sedibeng.

From July 27 to August 1, police rugby teams from across the country competed in daily matches that drew both excitement and applause from spectators.

The tournament showcased elite athleticism and discipline from both male and female SAPS players, culminating in thrilling B and A Division finals.

Deputy Provincial Commissioner, General Fred Kekana, welcomed teams on July 28 with a rousing speech that set the tone for the week.

“Wellness is a fundamental priority for SAPS,” she said.

“This championship is proof of how physical and mental fitness drive excellence — on the field and in our service.”

In the Division B men’s final, Gauteng edged out Free State in a hard-fought battle, winning 38–31.

The Division A women’s final between Gauteng and Eastern Cape went the full 80 minutes with scores tied, followed by extra time – still deadlocked – and was ultimately decided by penalties, with Eastern Cape narrowly clinching victory 3–2.

In the Division A men’s final, Eastern Cape defeated defending champions Western Cape 30–19, capping off an impressive tournament for the province.

With SuperSport providing national coverage, family-friendly activities for the public, and free entry, the event drew a strong community turnout and widespread positive feedback.

As the final whistle blew, Sedibeng could proudly reflect on hosting a successful national event — one that celebrated police professionalism, unity, and the enduring spirit of sport.
