Man sentenced for assault and rape

Moyeni initially evaded police but was arrested two weeks later in Mtwalume.

The life of a 20-year-old woman has been ruined after she was brutally assaulted and raped by a man she knew on July 9 three years ago.

The man, Andile Moyeni (33), was last week sentenced in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court to 17 years’ imprisonment for rape and a further 10 years for attempted murder. The sentences are to run concurrently.

On the day of the incident, the woman had been to visit her friend at Mfazazana in Mtwalume.

The court heard that after the friend and others had left for a funeral, Moyeni, who she knew, struck her on the head with a steel pipe and then raped her.

Police spokesman Petros Mpinge said the injuries were so severe she had to be hospitalised for a long period and has lost the use of an arm.

Moyeni initially evaded police but was arrested two weeks later in Mtwalume.

He was charged with attempted murder and rape.

Investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Siboniso Gcaba of Port Shepstone Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) successfully opposed bail.

Moyeni has remained in police custody since his arrest.
