Booming drives set up East Griqualand win for Gilliver

After the game members celebrated Esme Hadley's birthday with plates of snacks and a fine rendering of happy birthday.

Jason Gilliver headed inland to Kokstad Golf Club for the East Griqualand Champs, which he won on a score of 69 and 71, by two shots from Tom Lovett (Prince’s Grant).

It’s the second time he has won this trophy, the first coming two years ago.

He said his driving off the tee set him up very nicely and he made do on the greens, which were perhaps not in their best-ever condition.

It also made up for the disappointment of blowing the San Lameer Open a few weeks ago.

This time he finished strong with three birdies in the last five holes.

Meanwhile, back home, the message from Scottburgh Golf Club captain to members was ‘welcome back’.

Brian Richards led the way in the Individual Stableford with a score of 40 points, while usual playing partner Hans Beuthe was one adrift with 39.

Completing the podium was Deanne Jooste on 35 points.

Visitor Derek Cowden had a 2 club and Mick Marriot had the dubious honour of finding the hidden holes and coming Stone Last.

Lauren Davey won the ladies’ monthly medal on Saturday on nett 72.

Following closely on her heels were Linda Hall and Hayley Gilliver.

No numbers were given as we’re not supposed to ask a lady’s age.

Our intrepid ladies travelled down to Port Shepstone for their annual meet followed by the AGM for the South Coast ladies section.

P&G Construction held its monthly betterball Stableford game for the men.

Forty seven was the number to beat, scored by Graham Brown and John Mills, to take home the whisky.

Bob Hall chose Colin ‘One Over’ Moodie as his partner and they took second spot with 43 with Willy Creaney and Wayne Simpson tidying up with 42.

John Mills put his ball closest to the pin (again) on the 5th with Hilton McAuliffe doing the same on 17.

The hidden holes were found by Darren Walker who also had a 2 club along with Barry Kisten. Polishing the Stone on Saturday were Gary Jones and Deanne Jooste.

The 100 club is back on track. Last year due to the severe lockdown all the tickets were not sold and no draws were made.

We are now able to sell the rest of the numbers that weren’t taken and as soon as that is complete we shall start the draws.

By the way, the Joker is standing at R4000 for the lucky so-and-so who finds him.
