Youth event in Mtwalume provides tools for growth

Young people were encouraged to focus on entrepreneurship, and that help is available through various government departs

Capacitating the youth in economic development was the focus of a Youth Day celebration at Sibanini hall in Mtwalume on June 19.

The event was hosted by the Department of Social Development along with other government stakeholders.

Bongekile Kweyam from the Department of Economic Development and Environmental Affairs.

Thabani Kalala, chairperson for Civil Society in the Ugu District, said that most often the youth are left behind although there are programmes available to help them.

“Today we are here not only to celebrate Youth Day, but also to teach young people how to focus on entrepreneurship since there are no jobs. We want to teach them about business and how to sustain them.”

Kalala said that for young people who are not working there are government departments which are willing to assist and they must make use of them.

A community youth member, Lindelwa Mzobe, from Ward 10 in Umzumbe said young people would like the government to help them with skills development as there are no job opportunities in the area.

“We are told that education is the key to success, but we are sitting at home with our qualifications and have no jobs. As a young person, I would like to acquire skills in business so that I can make money.”

Nicolla Cele said the youth came to represent every young person of Umzumbe, especially those who are unemployed and those who are facing social ills in the community.

“We are sitting at home with qualifications, but we do not know which doors to knock on. My wish is that as young people with skills and talent, we are given a platform where we can show our work and make an income out of it.”
