Residents and visitors to Scottburgh beach can now enjoy improved shoreline accessibility thanks to the introduction of a beach chair, designed to support individuals with mobility challenges.

Thanks to a BackaBuddy fundraising campaign by Sue Martin in partnership with the Quadriplegic Association of South Africa, the chair was purchased and brought to the beach on July 2. Since news broke, many people have been curious to know about how one can access it.

The beach chair is available daily from 08:00 to 16:00, with bookings managed directly by the Scottburgh lifeguards. To reserve a time slot, beachgoers may contact the lifeguard team on 079-341-7263.

To ensure the chair remains safe, clean and available for all who need it, the following procedures are in place:

• Users are required to hand in their ID when collecting the chair. IDs are returned immediately once the chair is safely brought back.

• Rinsing the chair after use is mandatory, helping maintain hygiene and prolong the lifespan of the equipment.

• Users must bring their own assistant to help with transfers and support. Lifeguards will guide users on safe operation and designated usage areas.

“This initiative brings a meaningful enhancement to Scottburgh beach, allowing individuals of all ages and abilities to experience the joy of being close to the ocean,” said Martin.

“The community is invited to spread the word, encouraged to make use of this valuable resource, and help ensure it is treated with care and respect.”
