Port Shepstone man faces perjury charges
According to police, the man was forced to drive to a secluded area, where he was robbed.
A 37-year-old man appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on perjury charges on July 13, where he was released on R500 bail.
KZN police spokesperson Sergeant Thenjiswa Ngcobo said police in Port Shepstone initially investigated a case of kidnapping and theft.
“It was alleged that the man was ambushed by three unknown men who forced him to drive to a secluded area, where he was robbed.”
A community alert on social media (WhatsApp) on July 9 claimed that the man was reportedly kidnapped the previous evening (July 8) at about 20:30 as he was travelling from Marburg KFC traffic lights along Oscar Borchers Road.
According to the alert, at the speed humps on Oscar Borchers Road he noticed a man lying on the road.
When he stopped to offer assistance, multiple armed men emerged from the bush. They held him at gunpoint, forced him to drive to Umzumbe, and took him to an abandoned warehouse. He was beaten and coerced into transferring money from his bank account. They also forced him to call family members to demand additional funds before eventually releasing him.
However, Ngcobo added that Port Shepstone police arrested the man in connection with perjury as he had submitted a false statement under oath on July 12.
