Three ways to make a difference on Mandela Day

Whether donating food or volunteering to clean up the environment, residents are encouraged to get involved and make every minute count.

Residents across the South Coast will have three opportunities to honour Nelson Mandela’s legacy on  July 18, by giving their time, supporting those in need and helping protect the environment.

Whether donating food or volunteering to clean up the environment, residents are encouraged to get involved and make every minute count:

Khloé Anna Praim of Port Shepstone Girl Guides encourages everyone to support their initiative.

* At 09:00, the Port Shepstone Girl Guides’ Jars of Hope initiative will take place at the Port Shepstone Girl Guide Hall. Community members are invited to donate jars or/and non-perishable food items such as rice, pasta, soup powder, soup mix, lentils and stock cubes to help families in need. Contact Jolene on 072-148-5524.

* At 10:00, the Boogie Babes will host a 67-minute beach clean-up at the Margate Tidal Pool. Volunteers are encouraged to bring refuse bags, gloves, sunscreen, drinking water and litter-picking tools as they work together to keep the coastline clean.

Debbie Rudder invites everyone to pick up litter this Saturday.

* At 11:00, the Umtamvuna Marine Conservancy will leads its 67 minutes litter pick-up at the green open space behind the Port Edward Library. Gloves and refuse bags will be provided, making it easy for anyone to join the effort. Contact Renée Alcock on 084-660-0631.

Mandela Day is celebrated annually on July 18, encouraging people to dedicate 67 minutes to serving others in honour of the 67 years Nelson Mandela spent fighting for social justice.
