Schoolgirls face long recovery after R61 crash between Munster and Palm Beach
Support is being sought for the medical, travel and accommodation costs of two schoolgirls injured in the R61 crash.
Two schoolgirls seriously injured in the R61 crash are facing lengthy recoveries, with one now set to undergo spinal surgery.
Four children were travelling home from school on September 9 when the vehicle they were travelling in was involved in a collision between Munster and Palm Beach.
Three learners, two boys and Lakeisha Kleinwort, who featured on last week’s front page of the Herald, were thrown from the vehicle, while Lin-Marie Louw (14), a Grade 9 pupil at Suid-Natal High, had to be pulled from the wreckage.
According to Lin-Marie’s aunt, Lize Marie du Preez, the teenager suffered a head wound and a dislocated knee.
Lin-Marie (14) has not returned to school and remains at home recovering. She is not allowed to put any weight on her injured leg.
The family has an appointment with a specialist last Thursday to discuss the results of her MRI scan and determine whether surgery will be necessary.
Her medical expenses have reached almost R30 000, with further treatment expected.
“I am reaching out for support for my beloved niece, whose life was changed in a matter of seconds,” said Lize.
The situation has come at an already difficult time for Lin-Marie’s mother, Zonel.
On July 24, just seven weeks before Lin-Marie’s accident, Zonel was also involved in a serious crash on the R61 while travelling to work. A delivery vehicle allegedly veered off the road and crashed into her car.
Zonel suffered a large scalp haematoma and right-sided peri-orbital soft-tissue swelling. She is recovering but is still facing medical expenses and the financial impact of having her car written off.

Meanwhile, 16-year-old Lakeisha, a Port Shepstone High School pupil, is preparing for spinal surgery.
Her family has confirmed that she will go to King Edward Hospital later this month for an operation on her spine.
