3 nabbed in Gauteng for kidnapping, attempted murder

Metro police officer suspected to be involved in a foiled kidnapping, during which a woman driver was pulled over.

A 36-year-old woman sustained a gunshot wound to her lower body while attempting to escape from three men who took her captive in Benoni, on Johannesburg’s East Rand, yesterday morning.

According to information received from the local SAPS, the woman and her husband were driving along Modder Bee Road at around 08:30 when they were instructed to pull over by someone who appeared to be a metro police officer.

When the couple stopped, three men climbed out of a car parked along the side of the road.

The men approached the couple’s car, pulled the woman out of the vehicle, and demanded money.

The woman told them she didn’t have any money, which they disputed and claimed to know she was wealthy.

The men then allegedly pepper-sprayed the woman’s husband and forced her inside their vehicle.

As they made a U-turn to flee, personnel from a security company approached, and shots were fired at the security vehicle.

The security personnel returned fire and gave chase, following the men’s vehicle along Main Reef Road until the Plastic City informal settlement.

When the woman tried to escape from the vehicle, she was shot.

The three then abandoned their vehicle and ran from the scene.

Two men were arrested and detained at Brakpan SAPS. A third suspect was shot in the shoulder and is in hospital under police guard.

Cases of kidnapping, possession of a stolen vehicle, and attempted murder are under investigation.
