Hitch-hiker’s attackers sentenced

The victim was instructed to run into the sugar cane plantation after the attack.

TWO men were sentenced recently in the Ezinqoleni Regional Court for robbery and the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

They were arrested after attacking and robbing a hitch-hiker on the main road between Harding and Port Shepstone in July this year.

“The hitch-hiker was approached by the two men. One of the men attacked the hitch-hiker while the other pointed a firearm at him,” said police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

“They robbed him of cash, his driver’s license, bank cards and a cellphone. The victim was then instructed to run into the sugar cane plantation. He saw in which direction the robbers had fled and later reported the matter at the Harding police station.”

Warrant Officer Luvoyo Sinama and Const Sanele Ngcongo assisted the victim and they drove around, searching for the two suspects. Phikolomzi Lunwayi (21) and Phumlani Sanganga (21) were spotted and arrested. A firearm with two live rounds as well as the complainant’s belongings were recovered.

Lunwayoi was sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment for robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition while Sanganga was handed 12 years’ imprisonment for robbery.
