No more free lunch for councillors

The municipality has put a stop to all catering.

PANDEMONIUM broke out at last Thursday’s council meeting when Ugu speaker, Sithembiso Cele, told councillors that Ugu could no longer afford to supply them with free lunch.

The meeting came to a standstill while councillors debated the lunch issue, which wasn’t on the agenda. Most councillors were not pleased with this resolution. “I think the municipal manager should have warned us ahead of time. We came unprepared as we assumed lunch would be provided today,” said ANC chief whip Ian Mavundla.

Others claimed they were diabetic and needed lunch or else they would not be able to concentrate. Ugu municipal manager, ‘DD’ Naidoo, said that the municipality had decided to put a stop to all catering.

“I apologise that councillors were not warned that catering had been stopped for council meetings, but I cannot go back on my word. I have stopped catering for all other committees and it would be unfair if I didn’t stop catering for council meetings as well. However, if councillors still want lunch, they are welcome to pay for their own catering,” he said.
