Children’s home receives a lifeline

Generous donors have stepped forward to help, but more assistance is needed.

SISTER Tholakele Cele, the director of Sacred Heart Children’s Home in Mtwalume is overwhelmed by the community’s support and generosity.

Sacred Heart, which is currently facing financial difficulty, is the coast’s biggest children’s home and cares for some 60 vulnerable, orphaned, abused and HIV/Aids infected children aged between four and 18 years.

Recently the home hosted a women’s seminar which a huge success. Some 54 women (and two men) attended and thoroughly enjoyed a spiritual day which included entertainment, presentations, motivational speeches, prayer and a delicious lunch. “God took control and everything just flowed. We had an absolutely wonderful day,” said Sister Cele.

She added that since the home’s plight was featured in the South Coast Herald, Sacred Heart had received three brand new washing machines, a sewing machine, a secondhand stove, toys, seedlings, secondhand clothing and cash donations.

Sister Cele now needs help to achieve her vision of turning a disused pigsty into a therapy and administration block. The sisters were able to complete the shell of the building – the walls and roof – but they haven’t had the funding to finish the structure which is currently unusable.

Work that still needs to be done on the structure includes flooring, plastering and painting, windows, a parking area and ablution facilities. The therapy rooms and offices also need electrical fittings.

Anyone who can assist the home can contact Sister Cele at 083 4323178 or celetholakele@ymail.com.
