Youth triumphs at 10 000 bridge tournament

2013 marks the 20th anniversary of this prestigious annual event.

WILD Coast Sun Hotel and Casino Resort was once again host to the 10 000 bridge tournament, the seventh year at this venue and the 20th anniversary of the start of this prestigious event (formally known as the Cyril Robinson Pairs).

An enormous cash injection of R10 000 as an incentive for prizes was once again generously provided by the Wild Coast Sun, as well as the wonderful, spacious venue, free of charge.

There were three sessions of 27 boards involving 108 competitors from all parts of South Africa and the eventual winners were Johannesburg-based national team members, Robert Stephens (25) and Hennie Fick (37). The runners-up were local pair, Glenda Johnstone and Gill Pretorius, Ria Louw and Monica Volschenk were in the third spot and Mark Olif, president of the South African Bridge Federation, awarded the prizes.

Thank you to a number of local businesses, including the South Coast Herald, for advertising in the booklet issued to each player. For the first time, all advertisers had their ads displayed on a PowerPoint presentation via an overhead projector in the playing area.

Local players contributed to two large hampers which were raffled, raising R2 500 in aid of the Flower Foundation, which provides assistance for state pensioners.
