‘Red Frogs’ descend on Margate
It is their mission to provide a positive presence in alcohol-fuelled environments.
EVERY year matrics celebrate the end of their exams and their newfound freedom by attending a ‘rite of passage’ matric holiday. This year, the Red Frog crew will be on the streets of Margate during this imminent matric holiday week.
A support programme for young people of 15 to 25, Red Frogs comprise a group of trained volunteers who provide a safe, sober presence at parties. Serving pancakes by day so that revellers at least eat something and ensuring everyone gets home safely at night, these volunteers work together to build relationships of trust and friendship.
Recognising that excessive consumption of alcohol and other substances can lead to dangerous and life-altering behaviour, teams are on the streets at night ready to walk anyone home, diffuse unnecessary conflict and provide general assistance. Red Frogs educate on safe party practices, promote and provide non-alcoholic and/or diversionary activities that engage young people.
Red Frogs got their name from the red, frog-shaped, jelly sweets handed out by volunteers and have become a great way of connecting with matrics. Each year, more and more partygoers know to call 076 red frog (733 3764) for assistance around the clock.
