Remembering fallen comrades

Many wreaths were laid at the Armistice Day remembrance service last Sunday.

PRAYER services to honour the war dead were held countrywide last Sunday. The South African Legion and South Coast members of the Memorable Order of Tin Hats (Moths) paid tribute to the war dead at a solemn service at Mbango Valley Association last Sunday.

Former servicemen and women were joined by many South Coasters in paying tribute.

Wreaths were laid by Sappers Association, South African Legion, Ex-Servicewomen’s Association, Combined Operations Shellhole, Rough but Ready Shellhole, Ancient Mariners, South African Air Force Association, as well as by representatives of other organisations.

Pastor Graham Neyt conducted the scripture reading and prayers. The Mbango Melody Makers gave fine renditions of war songs.

Moth Gerry Gregory said he was pleased to see the good turnout at the service and he thanked the public and Mbango Melody Makers for making the event special. He also encouraged the youth not to forget this special day as it is of great importance that the tradition is carried on.

All over the world Armistice Day (November 11), which is the official anniversary of the end of World War I, is commemorated with a remembrance service on the Sunday closest to the date at which fallen comrades in all wars are remembered.
