Ugu will be prepared for any eventuality

Construction, which is estimated to cost R38 million, has commenced.

A SOD turning for Ugu District Disaster Management Centre was held at Marburg Extension 2 last Friday.

The municipality asked for assistance from the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs to build a fully fledged disaster centre following the disastrous 2008 floods which badly affected the district.

The centre is funded by the Department of  Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs and will be a disaster hub for the district and its municipalities.

“As Ugu, we are grateful that the Cogta MEC shared the same vision of having a bigger disaster centre that will cater for all local municipalities. We are proud that this vision is now being implemented,” said Ugu mayor Ntombifikile Gumede.

Construction, which is estimated to cost R38 million, has commenced and the site has been handed over to the appointed local service provider MCB Projects. The first phase of this project is expected to be complete by May next year.

Phase one will be the administration block which will house a camera room, reception area, control centre, offices, boardroom and restrooms. Phase two of the project will be the storage and garages while phase three will be a conference centre.
