Lions and walkers mark Diabetes Day
There will be two free health clinics this Saturday.
CELEBRATE World Diabetes Day this Sunday, November 17, by supporting the local events that are being planned to mark this important global effort.
Our Lions clubs will be doing their bit to promote diabetes awareness and to educate people about the disorder. Ramsgate Lions will offer free sugar tests at the Hibiscus Mall Margate, this Saturday, November 16, from 9am until 12.30pm. “One small prick can save a life,” said Ramsgate Lion Rob Henry.
Shelly Beach Lions Club will conduct a free health clinic at the Shelly Centre, also on Saturday, November 16, from 8.30am. This clinic will be part of the Lions’ Global Diabetes Day initiative and will include free blood sugar testing, blood pressure testing and dietary advice.
“The focus of this worthwhile project is to increase the awareness of diabetes within our community. During previous clinics we have tested over 300 people at a time. In some cases, the tests have literally saved lives when people discovered they had a high blood sugar result that could indicate a diabetic condition. Everyone is invited to visit us at Shelly Centre to obtain further information or to have a free blood test,” said club spokesman Mark Brewitt.
South Coast residents might also like to make a stand against diabetes by taking part in the Durban leg of the Diabetes SA 5km Global Walk. It starts at the Lower Marine Parade amphitheatre this Sunday, November 17 at 8am.
The organisers are expecting more than 3000 enthusiastic walkers, including one of our Currie Cup heroes, Sharks player and Diabetes SA brand ambassador Kyle Cooper, to take part. Also walking will be 14-year-old Queensburgh girl, Alison Jordaan with her ‘band of over 40 angels’. Popular personalities Kini Shandu from Gagasi FM and Neville Pillay from Lotus FM, who both have diabetes, will support the event.
Jenny Russell, the branch manager at Diabetes SA in Durban is over the moon about the backing her organisation has received for the event.
Everyone is invited to take part. The R50 entrance fee will be used to help underprivileged people who have diabetes. The first 1500 walkers over the finish line will receive a goodie bag. Registration can be done on the website www.diabetessa.co.za or register on the day, Sunday, November 17 between 7am and 7.45am.
