Spillage problem solved quickly

A mechanical fault at the Ramsgate pump station appears to be to blame for the spillage.

AN overflow at Ramsgate number seven pump station was a cause for panic last Sunday. A fault at the station caused sewage to bubble out of the manholes and into the river. Ugu District Municipality responded immediately.

Spokesman Sipho Khuzwayo said that emergency teams were dispatched and the fault was rectified. “Samples were taken for testing to determine if river water had been contaminated. The results were compliant with applicable regulations,” he said. Due to high occupancy, residents using conservancy tanks are advised to call 08000 92837 and book for emptying well in advance to avoid overflows.

Meanwhile, Ugu informs residents that refurbishment and upgrade projects towards sustainable water supply are on final bidding stages after which the implementation process will commence. Umtamvuna supply, which feeds areas from Southbroom to Port Edward, has had a consistent water supply throughout the season.

Water supply in rural Harding which includes KwaFodo, KwaMachi, KwaMbotho and KwaNyuswa are under stress but alternative supply is available. No problems were encountered in Harding town regarding water as the demand is low. Vulamehlo water supply has been affected by intermittent power outages at the supplying plant. This affects the Braemar and greater Vulamehlo areas.
