Probe into Leanne Douglas’s death complete
She was allegedly shot and killed by police in a high-speed chase.
THE Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has finally completed its investigation into the mysterious death of restaurateur Leanne Douglas.
Miss Douglas (45) was the owner of the Red Rooster restaurant at Spiller’s Wharf in Port Shepstone. She was found dead in an overturned, bullet-riddled vehicle on the N2 highway near Umkomaas in September last year.
She was allegedly shot and killed by police in a high-speed chase.
“We will be sending our recommendations to the Director of Public Prosecutions in the next few days for a decision,” said Moses Dlamini, the IPID’s national spokesman.
Douglas died after at least five police bullets struck her blue Chevrolet Spark, causing it to roll.
During the shooting, Leanne Douglas was reportedly on the phone with her mother, Leonie Luckin, telling her that police were chasing her and that she was scared.
The officers thought to be involved in the incident allegedly also tried to hide the shooting but their story came apart when their station commander spotted the bullet holes in the car and questioned them about it.
According to media reports, the six police officers charged with the murder are apparently still on duty.
