Illegal dumping angers environmentalists
A service provider was caught dumping refuse outside his property in Lions Grove.
BLATANT disregard for the environment is reason for serious concern. Environmentalists are fighting battles on a daily basis and their successes are limited.
A meeting was held at Hibiscus Coast Municipality a year ago about a particular service provider who has total disregard of by-laws and yet is contracted to the municipality to clear verges.
“This particular individual, who lives in Indira Road, Lions Grove, dumps all his waste refuse on his property close to the road verge and sets it alight whenever it reaches astronomical proportions,” said Morgan Naidoo, chairman of the Umbango River Conservancy.
“Further to this, he also dumps garden litter and other waste material in the neighbouring property, not far from one of the Umbango river tributaries. To date the municipality has not cautioned him,” said Mr Naidoo.
Mr Naidoo added that this service provider finds it easier and cheaper to dump on his property than transport waste to the municipal dumps.
“His tender price would have included transport costs to the dump. Whether he is still contracted to the municipality is uncertain, but his actions certainly warrant the attention and disciplinary action of the municipality,” said Mr Naidoo.
He encouraged HCM environmental officers and waste management officials to drive to Indira Road, and witness what has taken place along the road.
