Speakers’ Corner celebrates an incredible journey
A special guest spoke at the 300th meeting.
SPEAKERS’ Corner, a club consisting of a group of senior citizens who gather for a friendly social get-together every month, hosted its 300th meeting on Tuesday this week.
The club was started by the late John Candy, 27 years ago, initially at his home, and then later at Uvongo library where it continues to be held to this day.
Chairman Beryl Lakin said that those who attend this club are free to say whatever is on their minds, from ideas, jokes, opinions, poems, book reviews to life experiences.
“We try to introduce humour to our range of topics as we all know, laughter is the best medicine”, said Mrs Lakin.
In celebration of the club’s 300th meeting, a special guest was invited to speak, namely Glenda Schutgens-Jonis, a Dutch national resident in Malawi and president of Camellia International Training in Communication (ITC) Club.
She represented her country at the international prepared speech contest in the United States of America and won.
Her speech entitled, ‘An Incredible Journey’, was not about the physical moving from one point to the next, but essentially a metaphorical journey from the time she learnt to drive in Uganda, to her driving experiences in a big city, with big traffic, many people and potholes.
“Describing a journey, incredible or not, is, on the surface, a simple, and perhaps, a boring affair. It requires incredible skills to produce a masterpiece of journey”, she said.
The humour and precise choice of words made her speech a winning item and the seniors thoroughly enjoyed it.
