Parking permits for councillors and Amakhosi
Not everyone will have to pay to park, it seems.
COUNCILLORS and Amakhosi will not have to pay for parking. This was revealed at a press briefing held at the Hibiscus Coast Municipality’s council chambers on Tuesday.
HCM manager Maxwell Mbili said councillors and Amakhosi will get permits so that they won’t have to pay for parking.
“The municipality has decided to give councillors and Amakhosi permits because they are employees of the municipality and every employer has to provide parking for its employees,” said Mr Mbili.
“Because councillors and Amakhosi spend so much time attending municipal meetings and visiting various government departments, the municipality has realised it would be unfair for them to pay for parking while doing community work,” he said.
He revealed that the installation of the parking meters was going according to plan and that the meters were already operating.
He added that traffic wardens have been placed to monitor the parking bays online and if the parking management system shows that the meter has expired, or if there is a vehicle parked in the bay and the meter shows no payment, a parking violation notice will be issued.
“The municipality will not be held liable if the motorist has paid the parking attendant. Drivers are warned to make sure that payment is made at the parking meter,” he emphasised.
The costs for parking are R2 for 20 minutes, R3 for 30 minutes and R6 for an hour and payment can be done through coins or ItraMAS smart cards for those who register.
“Non-payment or any other violation of the parking system will carry a fine of R200 per violation and non-payment of the fines within the stipulated time frames will lead to a summons being issued.
