A CRAZED pack of dogs were put to death after they mauled a 51-year-old woman to death in Mtwalume near Hibberdene last Friday.
The woman, whose name has not yet been released, was found by a passerby at around 7am.
When police arrived at the scene, they discovered that the woman had multiple bite marks all over her body.
“It is alleged that the dogs from a certain house, close to where the body was found, had attacked the woman,” said police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.
She added that once Captain Alson Gumede from Hibberdene SAPS had examined the scene he had discovered that the dogs had come from a house a nearby. He had found that there were holes in the fence.
“Five of the dogs at the premises were put down last Friday by the SPCA,” said SPCA manager Michael Muller.
“All five dogs were cross-breed and, according to residents living nearby, were extremely aggressive. There have also been four attacks on people recently, prior to this attack on the woman,” said Mr Muller.
Senior SPCA inspector, Collin Chetty, who had to put the dogs down, said even the owner of the dogs could not go near them on that day. These dogs had formed a pack and were running around the area terrorising people. According to people near the scene the woman was on her way to work and had taken a pathway near the house,” said Insp Chetty.
He warned dog owners to confine their dogs within their property. “No dogs should go stray at any time,” he said.
Police are investigating a culpable homicide case and have not charged or arrested anyone at this stage.
