Cops walk the talk

The community is working together to fight crime.

THE Southport Community Safety Organisation (CSO) held its 1,8km introductory group walk last Saturday, with the start at the Southport shopping centre. To curb crime, CSO has launched street community orientated policing (COP). The resident Cop will patrol his or her own street when time permits.

Many work from home, or are retired, and are able to spend a few minutes during the day walking the streets and monitoring activity. The Cops will even have a uniform, a shirt and cap, which they will need to wear when patrolling. “The idea is that thieves will recognise the Cop uniform, and come to realise that there is someone guarding the streets during the day,” said John Irven, CSO chairman.
