Scottburgh pump station still clogged

The upgrading of the pump station, taken on by Ugu, has hit yet another speed bump.

THE Dolphin Drive Pump Station project has been plagued by mishaps and mistakes from the outset. The upgrading of the pump station, taken on by Ugu, has hit yet another speed bump. Civil engineers and the contractor are presently awaiting confirmation from Ugu that the additional work, being the contiguous steel sheet piling, can go ahead.

Shortly after the new contractors, Town & Around Civils, were appointed in September 2013, they discovered that the preliminary geotechnical investigation, done by another company, was incorrect and the rock level was a further two meters below what they anticipated.

This meant that further measures were needed to ensure that the R102 adjacent to the project would not collapse. After quotes and investigations, it was decided that contiguous steel sheet piling would be the best option.

This is a specialised operation and is not able to be performed by Town & Around. Sub-contracting quotes have been obtained. The sheet piling will provide a safe working environment by retaining the earth around the excavation pit. Once the sheet piling has been installed and secured, blasting into the rock can continue. The pump station is 9m deep and will be constructed within the bedrock.
