SHEPPIE High gr 7 current pupils and parents were invited to join in the open day held on March 1. After acting principal Dale Salotto’s speech, groups were taken on guided tours by the ECL members and shown various classrooms where experiments, slideshows and exhibitions were on show, as well as the range of extramural activities on offer.
Basketball teams played against Queensburgh, Holy Family College and Crawford La Lucia. First team lost to Queensburgh, beating HFC 41-29 and Crawford 32-29. U16s lost to Queensburgh, defeated HFC 43-17 and Crawford 40-7. U15 team lost to Crawford.
First team cricket boys won the tournament in the St Patrick’s tour, with Yogeshan Pillay awarded bowler and batsman of the tournament. The U14 team beat Southcity by 58 runs, PSHS 82 for nine. Ty Redinger made 38 runs for PSHS. Southcity were 24 all out. Günter van der Merwe took three for two. U14s then went on to beat Amanzimtoti High with PSHS 88 all out. Atish Ghingai made 20 runs. Amanzimtoti batted, making 78 all out. Ty Redinger took four for 28 and PSHS won by 10 runs.
Water polo teams against Thomas More, boys lost all games while the girls did very well. Jané Hills scored six and Aeran Jones (junior team) four of the ten goals for PSHS, winning the match 10-4.
Netball girls lost to Kloof 13-24, rugby boys beat Kingsway 18-0 in the Gelofte night series. First team hockey girls were placed sixth overall at the Spar KZN Regional Hockey Tournament at King Edward High. Touch rugby boys won 12-0 and girls won 5-1 against Crawford La Lucia in the league.
Alu Mbewana was the star athlete at the KZN athletics league, placed first in the U15 triple jump with a distance of 13.04m (SA champs qualifying distance), then placed first in the U15 long jump with a 5,38m jump. He further achieved a second place in 400m in 57,5 seconds.
Jason Olivier’s discus throw of 31.97m placed him first and a javelin throw of 42,44m earned him second place. Enkosi Pandela won the U15 long jump with a 6,18m jump. Placed first, Tenille Roux ran the U15 400m sprint in 67, 8 seconds. Sarah Schmitz (U17) was placed second at the KZN athletics league, completing the 400m sprint in 65,25 seconds, which set a new school record.
