Colours run for Holi festival
All walks of life celebrated the festival of colours in Marburg.
YOUNG and old covered themselves from head to toe in brightly coloured powders in celebration of the Hindu Holi festival.
The festival was hosted by the Shree Hanuman Sanathan Dharma Sabha Mandir and held at the Marburg Sports Complex last Saturday.
The festival dates back to the seventh century and traditionally takes place on the day of a full moon in the month.
The colours represent the triumph over evil in the form of energy, life and joy.
Families celebrated the festival of colours with dancing, prayers and, of course, the highlight of the evening, throwing coloured powder and coloured water at each other.
A bonfire was lit where the Holika was burnt and popcorn thrown into the fire. The lighting of the Holika signifies letting go of your problems and throwing them into the fire.
After the throwing of the colours and the lighting of the Holika families enjoyed good bhangra music played by Disco Fantasy.
Organiser of the event, Veena Lakhan, from the Shree Hanuman Sanathan Dharma Sabha Mandir said the event was a huge success.
“It was amazing to see so many people from all races and cultural backgrounds come together and have fun by just throwing the coloured powders. It was one of our best supported Holi festivals yet,” said Mrs Lakhan. For more photos, visit our gallery.
