Trafalgar Garden Club visits Southbroom
A well-placed bench in a secluded spot under the trees near a water feature, invites visitors to linger.
TRAFALGAR Garden Club members visited the Southbroom home of Horst and Trude Lehrer for their February meeting. Originally the garden was mostly rock on a steep slope and completely overgrown with weeds. Trude then consulted David Halle, who advised her to keep the trees, eradicate the weeds and plant indigenous plants, which has been accomplished most successfully. She has achieved, in five years, what she was told would take ten. Now there are paths and stepping stones or sleepers between the rocky outcrops, planted with a variety of aloes and ‘groundcovers’.
David Halle talked about the future of the availability of water and the necessity to eradicate alien plants, noxious weeds and creepers to further help prevent depletion in water supply . He advised all gardeners to grow their own vegetables and was enthusiastic about his own beans, spinach and tomatoes growing in raised beds, covered with shade-cloth to keep the monkeys out.
