‘Pink’ morning raises funds for breast cancer
The Pink Drive has two mobile trucks that provide both education and free mammograms throughout the country.
THE Human Rights’ Day Pink Drive Fun Run/Walk fund-raiser took place from the Uvongo Pier last Friday. Although it was a fun run, cyclists were welcome. The run/walk covered five and 10km routes. Organiser Deborah Berridge said that the Pink Drive is a breast cancer educational and fund-raising NGO with two mobile trucks that provide both education and free mammograms as well as wellness days and education for the community throughout the country.
“With the amazing support of our locals, we were able to help the country’s mothers, daughters, sisters and grandmothers fight breast cancer though early detection , because early detection of breast cancer saves lives. Your kind support through this initiative is greatly appreciated and we thank you for your donation. We raised a whopping amount of R2 005,” said Ms Berridge.
“Unfortunately, the statistics on breast cancer in South Africa are a growing concern and this is mainly due to lack of education and facilities. The need for early detection is enormous, which is why it is so important to keep these trucks on the road. To date the Pink Drive has educated over 30 000 women, provided over 19 000 self examinations and done over 4 000 free mammograms.”
