Mindless vandals go on wrecking spree
Hope Park's newly planted acacia trees were uprooted.
A NUMBER of acacia trees were damaged in an attack on the Hope Park Project in Marburg last week.
Locals in the area have described it as ‘truly disgraceful’.
The project was launched in 2012 with the goal of the park becoming able to provide recreational opportunities for the greater Port Shepstone area.
Last Saturday, Jimmy Naicker from the Umbango River Conservancy, sponsored 70 trees.
An eager team spent time last Saturday planting the trees, in the process beautifying the park’s boundary line.
On Monday morning, Pastor Reggie John noticed that some of the trees had been damaged and uprooted.

“It was disturbing and heartbreaking to see. Here we are trying to beautify the area for the public to enjoy and someone destroys it,” he said.
The trees were replanted last Monday. Pastor John urged the community around the park to be vigilant in order to curb future vandalism.
Anyone with information leading to the arrest and successful conviction of the person responsible for the damage to the trees will be rewarded.
Some of the prominent features already constructed include a beautiful walking trail and cycling path.
Future plans include a children’s playground, playing fields, a natural pond and an amphitheatre. Several benches sponsored by KFC have already been placed. The public is urged to use the park.
