An ocean of water, but none to drink

People are angry about being deprived of their right to water.

FOR almost a week, residents living in the Palm Beach area have turned on their taps to find no water.

The Herald also fielded calls from frustrated residents enduring interruptions to their water supply in Friesland Drive in Marburg and Mkholombe near Bhobhoyi.

Without this valuable resource, life has been extremely difficult and frustrating for many households.

And according to many residents, Ugu District Municipality has left in them in the dark. Phone calls to the municipality either went unanswered or residents were fed a variety of excuses.

During this dry period, residents said that when the water tankers did arrive they parked far away, forcing the elderly and disabled to cart heavy buckets of water.

“We heard the tankers hooting but we didn’t see them. We are old people, we can’t run to the water tanker and they don’t wait for us. I have not been able to shower or bath for almost a week. This is frustrating and unhygienic,” said one elderly resident in Palm Beach.

Another resident on Friesland Drive said Ugu’s management must get its act together. “They should rather be proactive than reactive,” she added.
