Hard work pays off for Candice

The former Sheppie High pupil has excelled in her field.

CANDICE de Boer of Umtentweni graduated with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree, summa cum laude, majoring in biochemistry and genetics.

She boasts an exemplary academic record, achieving certificates of merit for every module she completed during her undergraduate degree.

Candice, who enjoyed physical science and biology while still at Port Shepstone High, decided to do a BSc, and settled on biochemistry and genetics as majors because she found them interesting to study.

“Biochemistry allows the understanding of cellular biological processes within living organisms, while genetics studies show the inherent characteristics of organisms which are transmitted to their offspring. Both these fields can be used to understand human diseases and are vital in the quest to find cures,” she said.

Candice was awarded a vice-chancellor’s scholarship for her outstanding results in matric, which meant that all her expenses were paid for during her first year.

Because of her excellent results, the scholarship was renewed for each year of study, enabling her to pursue her degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

She says she gives her all in academic work to achieve good results. “I tried to never miss lectures and made sure I was up to date with all my practical reports and assignments,” she said.

She added that her mother’s support kept her going. “My mom encouraged me to persevere, she always motivated me to believe in myself,” she concluded.

Candice is currently pursuing her honours in biochemistry at UKZN.
