PORT Shepstone Islamic School was recently evaluated by Umalusi, a national quality assurance council tasked by government to monitor educational standards.
A 13-member team of evaluators led by Eliazer Lechaba and Cindy Thomas from the Umalusi head office in Pretoria spent an entire day at the school. Staff and pupils were interviewed to verify the initial submission of records and information.
At the mayoral community awards held at the Margate Hotel last Saturday evening, Hibiscus Coast mayor Cynthia Mqwebu declared Port Shepstone Islamic the winner for the ‘best performance by an urban school on the Hibiscus Coast’.
The Association of Muslim Schools’ (AMS) KZN provincial speech contest was also held last Saturday and Sabiha Motala and Muhammad Khamissa (gr 10) scooped third position. These young orators were undeterred, defending their positions in the top three slot and were honoured by school principal, Moulana Imran Khamissa at assembly.
The school hosted famous singer, Zain Bhikha, a pioneer Nasheed (spiritual song genre) artist who made his debut after winning a competition on Radio 702.
The Port Shepstone community was privileged to enjoy Zain captivating an audience of 500 people as he sang without instrumental accompaniment. He has performed internationally, has 12 albums to his credit and is rated among the top 500 influential Muslims in the world.
