Protests and petitions aim to save Wimpy

A mini protest will take place at Scottburgh beach tomorrow, Saturday, May 17 between 8am and noon.

THE closure of the Wimpy on Scottburgh beachfront has generated a massive backlash from people who are devastated at the news.

Those who have fond memories of the iconic eatery, fondly described by many as ‘the Wimpy with the best view in the country’ have decided to stand together and fight Umdoni Municipality’s decision to evict the restaurant.

More than 3 500 people have already signed the #WimpyStay petition which was started by civil rights organisation, AfriForum.

AfriForum’s Chris Fourie said the organisation was pleased with the response. “The petition has united the community to stand up and fight for the business,” he said.

He added that the petition has started ‘a buzz’ and that more and more people are joining the fight to keep the Wimpy open.

AfriForum will hold a mini protest at Scottburgh beach tomorrow, Saturday, May 17 between 8am and noon. The petition will available for signature there. Those opposed to the closure can also sms #wimpystay to 45267 at a cost of R1 per sms.
