Homeless dog gets a chance
Every dog has its day, even if it requires a little unexpected love.
A STRAY dog, with full-blown mange, has been given a second lease on life, thanks to the efforts of staff at the Lower South Coast SPCA.
The dog was caught by an inspector in March, after having roamed the streets of Albersville for almost two years.
“Every time we got a call from the public and we went to look for the stray dog, we couldn’t find her. But we never stopped searching,” said Michael Muller, manager of the LSC SPCA.
He said the local community had assumed she was owned by someone but was a roamer. However, this wasn’t the case.
When the dog’s condition deteriorated noticeably, the SPCA was phoned.
“When she arrived at the SPCA, it was her eyes which called, ‘help me, help me’ that stole the hearts of all the staff and prevented her from being euthanised,” said Mr Muller.
The dog has been named Lucky Muffin by staff, her mange has been treated, and she’s well on the road to recovery.
Lucky Muffin has been described as ‘gentle, loving, energetic, alert and trusting of humans’.
Her transformation has been nothing short of remarkable – her fur is growing back nicely and despite a few battle scars, she appears to be in good condition.
Her days of scavenging for food and searching for a safe place to sleep are far behind her. Once she is fully recovered, she will be looking for a loving ‘forever home’.
Lucky Muffin’s story highlights the need to assist abandoned pets, especially with winter around the corner.
Donations of blankets for cats and dogs, as well as strong toys like tennis balls, are needed for the dogs.
Soft toys, like ping-pong balls, are perfect for the cats and kittens.
Food donations are also welcome, plus household items for the charity shop.
