Water shortages imminent, warns Ugu
The Umzinto dam is down to 42 percent.
UGU District Municipality has warned of alarmingly low water levels of the Umzinto dam, as rainfall figures are expected to drop heading into winter.
This may well cripple water supplies to the communities in Shayamoya, Ifafa Mission, Umzinto Heights, Hazelwood and Nkonka areas.
Current levels show that the dam is sitting at 42 percent and, without significant rainfall, will have run dry by the end of July. EJ Smith dam, another source of water for the area, is also declining at a rapid rate.
Ugu said that the Umzinto Water Treatment Works is battling to cope with the water demand, due to the decrease in production flow.
“We are currently ensuring that we balance the system by alternating the supply to these areas. Over and above the supply arrangement, water tankers have been dispatched to offer water relief,” said Ugu after strategising with Umgeni Water.
Communities are urged to use water sparingly. For regular updates, members of the communities are urged to engage with their ward councillors and also visit the water services’ facebook page, Ugu Municipality: Water and Sanitation Services or call 08000 WATER (92837) or 039 6885830/36.
