From preacher to teacher – at the age of 47

He concentrated on his books and overlooked other things.

MTWALUME resident, Vusani Dlamini, a youth pastor from the United Methodist Church in Port Shepstone, has graduated with a Bachelor of Eduaction degree at the age of 47.

He is among 4 200 students to be capped by the University of Zululand in the past week. Mr Dlamini explained that he wanted to contribute to his community. “Trading the pulpit for a desk and a chair is so rewarding as I can now meet former pupils and have them say, ‘that was my teacher and we are proud of him’,” he said.

He mentioned that in being a teacher one gets to form a bond with the children. “Teaching them to read and write is so amazing and at the same time you give them direction in life.”

While he was travelling from his home to the university, Mr Dlamini said that everyone from his mother to his neighbours had helped him with his expenses. He concentrated on his books and overlooked other things and his efforts have paid off.

Dlamini is currently teaching Grade 1 at Inyandezulu Primary.
