QUICK response and good teamwork from Port Shepstone SAPS officers and members of the public resulted in the arrest of three men in Shelly Beach last Wednesday.
“Sergeant Desmond Theunissen of Port Shepstone K9 unit was called to a bushy area in Shelly Beach where people were suspected of dealing in drugs,” said police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.
“When he arrived he saw the men running in all directions. Sgt Theunissen radioed this information to other police vehicles and a search began,” said Lt-Col Wiid.
She added that residents living nearby managed to catch one of the fleeing suspects who was handed to police.
A second suspect was seen boarding a taxi and Warrant Officer Sydney Seaton from Port Shepstone SAPS stopped the taxi and arrested the man. The arrested man had a bag containing speakers and takkies which are suspected to have been stolen.
The third suspect was seen running across the main South Coast road towards the beach.
A community member then followed the man on his scooter to see in which direction he was heading, so he could direct the first police vehicle he came across. This suspect was soon arrested on the beach by traffic officers.
“While arresting the third man, police received a complaint from a holidaymaker from North West. He reported that his bakkie had been broken into whilst he and his family were on the beach at Shelly Beach.
His white jacket, sandals and wallet containing bank cards, firearm licence, and cash were stolen from the bakkie. The window of the motor vehicle had been smashed,” said Lt-Col Wiid.
A bag containing sandals and a jacket was found in the third suspect’s possession. A knife was also confiscated. The three suspects, all in their twenties, will face charges of possession of stolen property and theft out of a motor vehicle. They are due to appear in court soon.
