ROOF gardens are the latest innovation for lowering temperatures in a built-up environment, attracting wildlife to ‘dead’ areas and controlling rainwater run-off and recently a section of roof on top of Port Shepstone High’s technology department was identified as an ideal site.
As the surface of the roof garden was sealed, soil had to be perfectly balanced for planting. Pupils had to mix sand, compost, lime and fertiliser and then turn the heap three times for the mix to be correct. Advising and assisting, Geoff Nichols brought in fish and plants and phase one is now complete.
Last week, gr 12 pupils had an opportunity to meet Anthea Jones and Cooper the albino boxer as part of the life science syllabus.
Sheppie High wishes Marilyn Mante, who worked in the finance office for many years, a very happy retirement. The school is proud to announce that R11 000 was raised for Tekkie Tax.
