Tanzanian tour for Sheppie K9 officer

The police officer and his dog helped find a body in a gold mine.

SERGEANT Joseph Cele from Port Shepstone K9 unit, together with his dog Ronda, recently took on duties in Tanzania.

He was joined by three other search and rescue officers from Eastern Cape, Free State and Western Cape. The officers were tasked to find a man who was reported missing at a gold mine.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said Sgt Cele left on May 31. “It was reported that the man had been missing for three weeks. When search parties at the mine detected a bad odour, it was decided to call for additional assistance,” said Lt-Col Wiid.

After a search of two hours, the SAPS search and rescue officers located the badly decomposed body of the man hanging in one of the mine shafts.  Sgt Cele returned home last Saturday.

Sergeant Cele said once the dogs were sent into the mine they recovered the body within two hours. “It was my first trip out of the country and the people were very friendly and helpful,” said Sgt Cele.
