A WOMAN returning from a trip to the shops yesterday was accosted in her Umtentweni home by an intruder who held a knife to her throat before locking her in her bedroom and ransacking the house. The woman managed to escape through a French door and ran to her neighbour for help.
“The young man, wearing a black hoodie, was waiting inside the house and pounced as the woman (57) opened the door,” said police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid. She said it was later discovered that the man had gained entry through a back window which had been forced open. The burglar guards had been pried apart.
The man fled with the woman’s wallet containing cash and cards, and a cellphone. “It appears the man was watching the house and when he saw the woman leave he forced his way in,” she said.
Lt-Col Wiid said residents are urged to be alert when leaving and arriving at their premises. “Bushes and shrubs at the entrance to your property should be trimmed back as they provide place for criminals to hide. Seek assistance immediately if you see anyone suspicious loitering around.”
